Gone are the days women try to look good exclusively for men. At Sergio Hudson’s Spring-Summer 2027 show, beauty was for the female gaze. “If you think about the James Bond woman, it was always seen through a man’s lens,” lead makeup artist Sir John tells ESSENCE. So, this season, women took back the power over their beauty—through their own gaze.
“A serious eye,” John says about the most compelling part of the look. Referencing a ‘70s Sharon Tate winged liner, “it’s a forever reoccurring beauty staple.” Instead of an angled wing, he lined the eyes completely horizontal for a straightforward, yet dreamy look reminiscent of Tate and Elizabeth Taylor. “We are getting everyone ready for the same party,” he says. But, “I’m so anti-trend.”
Not one woman had the same look. Using an unreleased Danessa Myricks palette for a metallic lid, “beauty is a feeling,” he says. Then, from out of what felt like nowhere, Danessa Myricks herself appeared. “Every single one of these shades is a completely different formula,” she says in conversation with Sir John. As a self-taught artist, Myricks has long been a consumer. So, “as I develop, I’m thinking about that person all the time.”
To complement the shadow, John used Balm Contour as a bronzer placed high above the cheekbone, into the temples and almost across the nose bridge. Then, a cream palette mixed into moisturizer into the décolletage for a heat-intoxicated-blush. “I want everyone to have a sunburn,” he says. “Even though we’re melanated, we still love the sun. I think we’re built to it.”
As for the hair, lead stylist Destiny Kelly went with a sleek, classic look: A slick back for men and a simple bun or side part slick for women. Using Camille Rose Guava Mousse and a new formula of Guava Gel, she molded down the hair and set it in place. “We wanted the hair to be classic but still give a statement,” she says. Which is true to what Danessa Myricks tells us: “Sergio is all about this exquisite sophistication. Every woman I ever see in Sergio, I want what they have on.” Meanwhile, nail lead Christina Duong brought the stunning, striped nails to life.
